And Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country.”
Lk 4: 24
How much do we miss out on because prophets are not recognised? How much evil and wrong-doing continue to flourish? Within the Church, liberation theologians from South America were persecuted, the We are Church movement and the Austrian Priests’ Initiative are condemned. Why is it more comfortable to stay as we are, to stagnate? Why do we not relish the challenge of growth and change?
In the secular world, whistle-blowers condemn themselves to lives on the margins, the end of their careers as they knew them and hoped to continue. Since whistle-blowers shine light on bad or dishonest practices, why don’t we support them? Our lack of support is a vote for the status quo. We might continue secure in our jobs. But what of our consciences? Do we sleep well at night.
Oh God, grant us the courage and integrity to stand up with your prophets.
