But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
and whoever would be first among you must be your slave;
even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matt 20: 25-28
Wow! Is this one lesson most of us have put aside. Everyone demands privileges and respect – for their wealth, political standing, position in the church hierarchy, pecking order in the workplace, social rank, natural gifts bestowed by an accident of birth, and so it goes. Pretty much everyone looks for someone (if not many, many people) to lord it over. Where does this sit with “Do unto others, or “Blessed are the poor in spirit”? Yes, most of us can pull rank over somebody. But respect? You can only ever earn that, by the way you live, by the way you treat other people.
God help me in trying to treat everyone with respect, serving as Jesus served, so that your kingdom may come.
